Environmental Commitment

Environmental awareness and stewardship are given top priority in the activities of all our US locations. We are committed to training all of our employees in environmental awareness and we will ensure that we play our part in maintaining a safer, cleaner environment for future generations. Our web site now has content devoted specifically to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which covers important business issues of Community, Climate and Sustainability.

In addition, we have earned the prestigious ISO 14001 Certification at virtually all of our operating sites, ensuring that all site managers have extensive training on our Environmental Management System.Aggregate Industries has adopted a company-wide Environmental Policy (pdf) and we remain committed to environmental stewardship across our regional businesses. We are also actively developing innovative new products such as Pervious Concrete and Porous Asphalt to aid developers on LEED certified projects. Many environmental initiatives result in our regional businesses receiving prestigious environmental awards from various industry associations and state agencies. that we produce, please contact us.

Environmental Management

The environment plays a large role in Aggregate Industries’ US operations. We are taking a leap forward by developing and implementing a certifiable Environmental Management System (EMS) across all US regions. This EMS meets the requirements of the international standard known as ISO 14001. The EMS certification is being developed in line with the goals of the company’s Environmental Policy. After identifying aspects of the Company’s products, activities, and services that have the potential to significantly impact the environment, we will manage those aspects effectively, thus preventing environmental impacts. Meyer and PAVELOC implemented our EMS at all of the Illinois and Wisconsin facilities that conforms to the international standard, ISO 14001. Meyer and PAVELOC received certification for their facilities following a series of audits conducted by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance, an independent auditing organization dedicated to public health and the environment.

Each of our regional businesses has conducted extensive environmental training. By certifying our EMS to the ISO 14001 standard, Aggregate Industries can prove to customers, suppliers, regulators, employees, and other stakeholders that the Company is managing potential environmental impacts in accordance with an internationally recognized standard.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Corporate social responsibility is paramount at Aggregate Industries and includes a strong and enduring commitment to the communities in which we work and live. A dedication to sustainable development and the preservation of the resources we rely on for our products as well as the land that supports our business and your communities.

We look at the planet as our responsibility as well and through our parent company’s Foundation, we are committed to the future built environment and affecting change in the way everyone views the term “sustainable.” This is evident through the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction which provides $2 million is prize money every three years for products, concepts, and socially responsible solutions that solve the many issues our planet faces with the projected increase in population. See some of these extraordinary solutions at www.holcimawards.org.

As further evidence of our continuing commitment to the environment and the issues surrounding sustainability, our West Central Region’s was recently awarded the State of Colorado’s “Sustainability Champion Award” for their work in the local community. Additionally, we work closely with local and national groups to development an understanding of what we do and how we proactively contribute to economic, social and environmental well-being across all the areas where we have operations.

We have sought to make our business accountable through the adoption of best practice, such as ISO 14001 for environmental management and through communicating on a wide range of non-financial information. We are proud of our recent partnerships with the EPA Climate Leaders program and also with the Cool Climate Concrete program, which are further evidence our company-wide commitment to the environment and our communities.

Communities Where We Live and Work

Community engagement has long been an important part of Aggregate Industries’ priority as a good neighbor. As a business that is inherently local, we place significant emphasis on developing and maintaining strong ties to the communities in which we work and live. Aggregate Industries understands and accepts the responsibility to minimize the effect on those who live around us. Through our actions, we strive to become a trusted and valued partner in the communities we serve, supporting local schools, events and charities.

This is the case in many of our quarries around the US and although times have changed and many local people have never had a direct connection to the quarry, we remain committed to listening to and supporting our neighbors. Our Swampscott Quarry in the Northeast Region has over 100 years of operations and we are continually reminded that a large part the community was created around the quarry.

A record number of visitors attend our Quarry Earth Day Celebrations which establish a commitment to the local community for years to come. The quarry tours and hands-on exhibits helped guests to understand the safe, efficient process of producing crushed stone and its many applications. We endeavor to conduct similar community events across our US Regions which give us the opportunity to explain the work we are undertaking with some of our key stakeholders on both an operational and environmental level.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)

Similar to carbon, there is an increasing appetite for water footprinting. When considering this approach, care must be taken when considering the different types of water and the scarcity of water in some regions where the product is made. We are considering this as part of our product lifecycle assessment.
