Aggregate Industries Meyer Material Company (Midwest Region) Receives Recognition for the Company’s outstanding Community Involvement

Des Plaines, IL, October 12, 2010 – Meyer Material Company, Aggregate Industries Midwest Region, received the 2009 Community Relations Award from the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP). The IAAP Public Information and Education (PIE) Committee recognized Meyer Material Company, Hanson Material Service, and Vulcan Materials Company for their outstanding community involvement and support activities at award presentations during the month of October.

The Community Relations Award is presented annually to those IAAP Producer Member companies that demonstrate a superior level of community engagement as evidenced by the mine’s appearance, educational contributions, and participation and sponsorship of local events. The award also recognizes the mining operations whose community involvement and support activities have enhanced the individual producer’s aggregate operation and the general public perception of the industry.

During the award presentation, IAAP Executive Director, John Henriksen, commended Meyer Material Company’s many community relations efforts including hosting Crystal Lake High School students to whom the employees explained mining and land reclamation as part of their earth science, geology, and environmental studies courses. Meyer Material Company has also given area science teachers the unique opportunity to refresh their knowledge of geology and water flow through underground sand and gravel deposits during a visit to the mine.

Meyer Material Company has created a foundation for sustainability on a local level in order to build a partnership with those communities that are directly impacted by the company’s operations. Meyer Material Company also has a conservancy agreement with the village of Algonquin, donating land to be used in a storm water management project for a future park site.

The company has sponsored numerous community events including the fireworks display during Algonquin Founders Day where the company’s employees marched in the parade. Through participation in the McHenry County Gravel Advisory Council and agreements with the villages of Cary and Algonquin, the company’s Algonquin Pit #5 Plant Superintendent, Ron Raupp, and Manager of Environmental and Land Services, Randi Wille, work hard to address all citizen concerns about the company’s mining and trucking activities.

“We are always looking to improve our relationship with the community," says Randi Wille, “we all work hard to gain the trust and respect of our neighbors and the surrounding community. It’s nice to be recognized for those efforts. It’s something we can build on.” Meyer Materials Company will continue to improve its community relations and will apply for the 2010 Award as well.
