Sentinels of Safety
Sloan Quarry Operations Manager Mark Snyder, Truck Driver Troy Pratt, and Regional Safety Manager Chris Welly accepted the Sentinels of Safety Award on behalf of all the Sloan Quarry employees.

Sentinels of Safety Award

The National Mining Association (NMA) and the Mine Safety and Health Administrations (MSHA) recently awarded Aggregate Industries' Sloan Quarry the Sentinels of Safety Award. This award is co-sponsored by both MSHA and the NMA, with only 5% of all mining operations even qualifying for the award each year. This is the first time an Aggregate Industries' mine has won the national Sentinels of Safety Award!

The idea for the National Safety Competition—Sentinels of Safety—was conceived in 1925 during the time that President Hoover, a former mining engineer, served as Secretary of Commerce with the Bureau of Mines under his jurisdiction. Realizing the dire need for improving mine safety, Hoover arranged for a conference of interested persons to discuss mine safety, a proposal was made to establish a nationwide mine safety competition, which was readily approved by Hoover.

The purpose of the annual Sentinels of Safety award program is to recognize the achievement of outstanding safety records, to stimulate greater interest in safety and to encourage development of more effective accident prevention programs among the Nation's mineral extractive industries. The Sentinels of Safety award is the oldest established award for occupational safety and considered the most prestigious.

Doug Barrowman, Bardon Materials Vice President, said, "I am pleased that our employees at Sloan have embraced the concept that safety is everyone's concern, and gotten involved to make real improvements since 2004." Barrowman went on to say, "Aggregate Industries has introduced PPE, management audits and site safety teams to focus and improve the working environment and culture at the site. It is high praise from the MSHA team, but we must continue to be ever vigilant to ensure we provide the safest possible workplace at Sloan."
