National Asphalt Pavement Association recognizes Mid Atlantic Asphalt Division

The Mid Atlantic Region’s Asphalt Division has been awarded the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2006 Quality in Construction Award for their paving project on Maryland state highway 5 NB from MD 235 to Old Village Road.

This challenging project consisted of 9,300 tons of asphalt paving produced out of the Waldorf asphalt plant.  The project was paved at night on a busy roadway, and was completed with a perfect safety record.  Paving Foreman Gerald Hicks and his entire crew were instrumental in the success of the job and the award was accepted by Area Superintendent Tommy Clarkson.

NAPA’s Quality in Construction Award recognizes hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavements of excellence.  “NAPA selects the award recipients using a known set of standards that have been shown to give good results,” commented Richard F. Moore, Jr., Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors.  “This award demonstrates the high-quality of work that the HMA industry is achieving.”

The Asphalt Division also recently received NAPA’s Diamond Achievement commendation for excellence in Hot-Mix Asphalt plant operations.  The Kirby Road plant in Clinton, Maryland and the Severn Plant in Severn, Maryland were among the most recent recipients of this national industry recognition program.  The Diamond Achievement commendation recognizes exceptional site performance in key areas, including site Appearance, Operations, Environmental Practices, Safety, Permitting & Regulatory Compliance and Community Relations. “I want to congratulate our asphalt plant staff and paving crews for their hard work and continued commitment to quality,” said Regional President Pat Groff.  He continued, “We are proud that 5 out of 6 of our asphalt plants have now received NAPA’s Diamond Achievement commendation and we are working hard to go 6 for 6 by the end of 2007.”
